Oh captain, my captain. How Robin Williams will carry on positively influencing a generation.

I'm going to keep this post brief.

Millions of childhoods and grown-up-childhoods are filled with memories of Robin Williams' films. He made people laugh, cry, think about morality and was without a doubt universally loved and adored by his fans.

It is tragic that the death of someone so brilliant and talented has had to be the force for the world to start talking about suicide, depression and mental health. There is no denying that discussions have started to happen and I sincerely believe that this may be a time in which attitudes may start to change. I wish there had been some other way for these issues to be brought into the limelight, I really do. No one should have to feel that suicide is the only option left. Sadly, people still do.

There are so many well-written articles online at the moment that anything here would be redundant except for to say the obvious: pain and suffering are not limited to visible, physical injuries nor can it be measured with a lab test.

Our bodies are all very similar but our minds are vastly unique and this has to be remembered and respected when helping others. You can never know what someone else is thinking, feeling or what they have been through, so listening, empathising and suspending judgement (or, even better, doing away with judgement entirely) is something which can help you grow into a more loving human being, not just a more competent doctor.

I wanted to take an excerpt from one Guardian Article which I hope may help some to understand the serious, debilitating issue which is depression in this time when it's so confusing to have lost someone so bright, funny and seemingly joyful:

"Dismissing the concerns of a genuine depression sufferer on the grounds that you’ve been miserable and got over it is like dismissing the issues faced by someone who’s had to have their arm amputated because you once had a paper cut and it didn’t bother you"

With love from me and a reminder to love each other.
